Cannon Fodder
A new Cannon Publishing anthology is out!
It’s a few years after the apocalypse, and Taylor has a problem. One of her friends may be making a very bad mistake with her life choices, and that means a trip to the remains of Dallas. And not the nice parts, either. Out past the fortified neighborhoods, the barricadas, out to the clubs where you can buy anything at all if you have the price.
Here’s how it starts:
Taylor slung the big Chevy Tahoe into a high-speed turn, tires screeching, heavy on the brakes, halfway on the gas, driving two-footed. Just at the apex of the turn, she came off the brakes and floored the accelerator again. The back end fishtailed a bit, but she’d done this before and knew how far she could push it. Brianna, huddled down on the floor on the passenger side, stopped crying long enough to scream all the way through the turn.
The souped-up V8 engine threw the SUV forward effortlessly and she spared a second, now that they were going straight, to glance in the rearview mirror. The men that were chasing them were still there, but at least they hadn’t hit the vehicle with any more bullets.
When she looked back down, she saw a dog race across the street in front of her, followed by a little girl.
“Oh, God, no,” escaped from her lips as she locked the brake pedal down and desperately tried to swerve to avoid killing the cute little girl. Except the steering didn’t work. That required traction, and the tires were skidding on the pavement, each one sending up a cloud of smoke. Momentum relentlessly shoved the big, heavy Tahoe forward.
The child had stopped in the middle of the street and was looking wide-eyed at the gargantuan vehicle bearing down on her, her face framed by a mass of dark brown curls.
